Sound Check Studios: Magic Beans & The Chops

November 1, 2024 - We had heard a lot about the Jam Band Magic Beans and the local Boston band The Chops and we decided to go to Soundcheck Studios, in Pembroke, Massachusetts to see them.

The show started at 8:00 p.m. with The Chops as the opener. A local Boston band, The Chops bring to the audience in Pembroke that West Coast psychedelic sound with a twist. Influenced by Funk, Blues, Jazz, Synth Rock, and all genres of music, the Chops centered their style on music that can make the public move.

Their unique style and large repertoire have gained them national notoriety. They have extensively toured their analog dance music and neo-jam across the whole country, earning them an expansive fan base.

Led by Seth Gomez, the band is composed of keys, guitar, drums and bass. Each member writes songs and presents their own sound while melting as a whole. The Chops take inspiration from all realms of music. From Hot jazz to modern pop, The Chops make it their own. The sound is dynamic but holds true to the sounds of psychedelic pop.

The way that brings The Chops to success has been resumed by Seth Gomez, the band’s leader.

“We’re a Psychedelic Rock band inspired by all realms of music. The Band was founded by me (Seth) and I wanted to create a unique sounding band that also would take risks with experimental improvisation. We never play the same song the same way and never repeat our setlists. We’re all very inspired by The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, The Beach boys and so many more artists. We strive to create unique moments of improvisation every show.”

“In the Chops no one member is more important than the other. The crowd is also a huge part of the band's experience. With a tight knit family, The Chops are able to provide an energy that is exclusive. A welcoming environment and a night of dancing is what you can expect.”

With a group of talented musicians such as Seth Gomez – guitar, vocals, Chris Cellucci – drums, Matt Glickman – keys, Sal Restuccia – bass, The Chops performed to a rowdy crowd of Jam Band lovers who made the venue shake rock and roll.

After a brief intermission at 9: 30 p. m. The Magic Beans took the stage. The jam band from Colorado who completely understands how to get a live room to shake and roll has once again offered a testament to this quartet’s musicality and sense of imagination.

At Soundcheck Studios, the Beans honor the wide variety of American music by mixing the flavors of funk, R’n’B, rock, soul, and even some country influence into a complete package that is noticeably their own. Their latest release, Unzipped, is an all instrumental tribute to lo-fi recording techniques, hip hop beat tapes, and 90’s neo-soul. Previous studio releases like Slice of Life, showcase the bands’ depth of songwriting and composition as well as their knack for catchy lyrics.

With a group of talented musicians: Scott Hachey (guitar, vocals), Casey Russell (keyboards, vocals), Chris Duffy (bass, vocals), Cody Wales (drums) and an impressive repertoire of 100+ songs and resume of 1000+ shows in their wake as a young group, Magic Beans are sure to be one of those bands you’ll keep your ear on for a long time.
