On Sunday, July 21, 2024, Folk Country string band Old Crow Medicine Show had continued their 2024 Summer Tour at the Roadrunner in the Brighton neighborhood of Boston. The group that have been making music for 26 years have once again shown that keeping their old-timely style was the key for worldwide success. Adopting one’s roots in the musical entertainment world is the most productive way to connect the band with its fans.

Also, it was with great excitement that the public around 2,500 fans had celebrated the performance of both bands. The show with Molly Tuttle & Golden High Way as opener was phenomenal. The Bluegrass, Folk band including Molly Rose Tuttle (singer, guitar, banjo), Shelby Means (bass), Kyle Tuttle (banjo), Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle), and Dominik Leslie (mandolin) started the show with a series of songs - several of them - from their album Crooked Three,  which won in 2023 the recognition Album of the Year.

It was around 9:15 p.m. when Old Crow Medicine Show entered the stage. Starting with "Tell it To Me", the group continued with a series of songs released from their different albums. "Big Iron World" (2006), "Tennessee Pusher" (2008), "Carry Me Back" (CD) released in 2012, "Remedy"(2014), "50 Years Blonde on Blonde" (April 28, 2017), "Volunteer" (April 20, 2018). In 2020, the band released three tracks record: "Nashville Rising," written after Nashville’s Super Tuesday tornadoes and directly benefiting relief efforts; "Quarantined," a tongue-in-cheek, classic country-inspired number about not being able to kiss your lover while quarantined; and "Pray for America," which was commissioned by NPR as an inspirational piece for listeners coming out of COVID. The last album, Jubilee, featured many subjects range from voodoo and the wolfman to romantic love and peace on Earth.

Over the weekend, the music played by the group at the Roadrunner was rich and varied. It was a mix of Bluegrass, Folk, and Country. Along with original songs, the band performs many pre-World II blues and folk songs. To execute them the group features a list of talented artists: PJ George, Critter Fuqua, Mike Harris, Morgan Jahing, Dante Pope, Ketch Secor, and Cory Younts.

Listening to the repertoire, there’s something particular with Old Crow Medicine Show. The introduction of the electric guitar was an innovation that makes people surprised.

“People get surprised at the electric guitar and think that’s not roots music. People think roots music means acoustic music. But electric music is roots music. The reason why they didn’t play electric guitars back in the 1750s is that they didn’t have any. People forget that roots music was at one time brand new,” declared Critter Fuqua.
