Interview with Wil Martin of Earshot about their new single “Where Were You?”.


What inspired the creation of this single?


I tend to write a lot about my journey with personal growth, life, and relationships. I like to write about something I’m going through, what I’ve learned from it, or both. “Where Were You?,” as with many of the songs that I write, is a little of all of that.


What story or message does the song convey? 


The story is about the quiet weight of emotional abandonment that I was experiencing at one point in my life. I tried to capture the experience of feeling unseen and unheard in a moment of need—of slipping away while someone close to me is completely oblivious. But more than just a reflection on loss and disconnect, the song also marks a turning point. It’s about the internal shift that happens when you stop waiting for someone to show up, and instead, reclaim your voice. It’s not a song about regret, it’s a reckoning. A realization. A raw, unapologetic reminder that choosing yourself is not weakness, it’s power.


How does this song differ from your previous releases? 


It marks a shift for us—both sonically and emotionally. Sonically, I think “Where Were You?” harkens back to some of the songs from our album TWO while blending in a little more of a raw vulnerability we haven’t fully exposed before. It’s stripped down in some places, more haunting, more reflective. More refined.


Lyrically, I think it digs deeper into the emotional weight of disconnection and the moment of reclaiming your identity after being unseen for too long. There's no masking the hurt, but there's also no apology for walking away from it.


It’s still unmistakably Earshot—heavy, melodic, and intense—but this time, the anger isn’t pointed outward. It’s inward. It’s introspective.


Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics? 


The song reflects a moment where you start to realize you’ve been holding on to something that’s already let go of you. Whether that’s a relationship, a friendship, or even a part of yourself… it’s that quiet breaking point where you stop asking for answers and start choosing your own peace.

It wasn’t written to call anyone out—it was written to let go. That makes it one of the most honest and vulnerable songs we’ve released. It’s not just a story—it’s lived experience.


Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?

Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP? 


Yes! This song will be a part of our 11- song full length album coming out this FALL 2025.
