Interview with theRave of Spells and Curses. Their new single "Just Like That" drops April 22nd.

What inspired the creation of this single?

"Just Like That" was inspired by the idea of what it would sound like if Chris Cornell wrote a heartbreak song with The Beatles backing him. A few years ago, I was on a long road trip with a friend who is a huge Beatles fan, and I wasn’t, so I asked him to get me into them. 16 hours later of nothing but Beatles music, and I developed an appreciation for their work. I wanted to capture that raw, aching intensity while surrounding it with lush harmonies and classic songwriting.

What story or message does the song convey?

It’s about that moment when love has ended and you'd give anything to have it again. You would drop everything in an instant, "just like that". to be with them again, if only they'd call or ask you.

Can you tell us about the creative process?

Like most of my work, I wrote and recorded it alone in my room, layering everything piece by piece. The vocals were especially important—I wanted them to feel both intimate and soaring. The harmonies were a challenge but also one of my favorite parts of the process, bringing that Beatles-esque warmth into the track.

How does this song differ from your previous releases?

This one leans more into classic songwriting, with a blend of 90s rock grit and 60s melodic sensibilities. It’s a bit more vulnerable and stripped back in some moments but still has that emotional intensity that runs through all my music. It was really my first and only attempt at writing a song that sounds like The Beatles.

What challenges did you face while writing or recording?

Stacking the harmonies took a lot of trial and error. I wanted them to feel natural but still powerful. Also, balancing the rawness of the vocals with the polished, full-band sound was tricky—making it sound like a live band while recording alone.

Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?

I played around with layering vocal harmonies more than usual, almost like they were their own instrument. I also tried to channel more restraint in parts of the song to make the climaxes hit harder. The arrangement is fairly sparse, but each element is super important as is.

Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?

Yeah, like most heartbreak songs, it comes from a very real place. That feeling of being blindsided, trying to make sense of how something so meaningful can disappear in an instant—it’s something I’ve experienced, and I think a lot of people have too. But I feel my songs bring things to life, so I've gotta be more impeccable with my word.

Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?

Not yet, but I’m excited to bring it to the stage. I think the dynamics of the song will really hit differently in a live setting, especially the harmonies and the buildup of emotion. I'm looking forward to playing it during this summer's tour.

Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?

Oh yes. I’ve been releasing singles that will eventually form a larger body of work. Each song fits into a bigger picture—like different pages of the same book. It's for a double album... stay tuned.
