What inspired the creation of this single?
"Yummy Yummy Yummy" was originally recorded and performed by Ohio Express in 1968. It is a song that I heard so many times growing up and has always been a 'bucket list' song that I have wanted to cover.
I am fan of bubble gum music and it is a bit of a secret ingredient to my style of rock and roll , powerpop and punk. I am also a huge fan of The Ramones who elevated bubble gum in their music and "Yummy Yummy Yummy" was one of those songs that I could hear them doing in their style and I wanted to emulate that.
What story or message does the song convey?
To me "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is just a silly love song but is the definition of bubble gum rock. If I had to explain what bubble gum music was this song would be the go to.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
This was an easy song as I didn't have to write it. Because it was a bucket list song for me for a long time I heard exactly how I wanted my version to sound like before I hit record.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
"Yummy Yummy Yummy" is different from my previous releases as this is the very first cover song that I have ever recorded and put out. I do think though that it fits right in with the songs on my previous Ep 'Let's Jet'.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
I knew going into this how I wanted the song to sound with big guitars, big drums and bottom end. I wanted to keep the integrity of the original recording especially in the vocals but I did end up doing my own spin on the backing vocal harmonies to make it fit my version.
Did you experiment with any new instruments, techniques, or styles?
This was a really fun song to cover and there wasn't much experimentation except in the backing vocals to make it fit my take on the song. Mostly my version is simplified and revved up compared to the original.
Is there a personal connection or story tied to the lyrics?
I wouldn't say I have a personal connection to the story or the lyrics but I do have a connection to the song in that it is a good memory for me. It takes me back to when I was a kid hearing the song on the television and radio and I have fond memories of a simpler time and finding my love of music.
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
I haven't yet performed my version of the song yet but I will be taking it for a spin with my first shows of 2025 in Boston,MA Mar 7th , Portsmouth ,NH Mar 8th and here in Toronto ( The Bovine ) Apr 25.
I do have somewhat of a foggy memory of The Killjoys trying this song way back in the 90's. I am hopeful that it will make a few people smile.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
Right now I put "Yummy Yummy Yummy" out as single but I think it will definitely be a part of an EP or full album. It may possibly land on a record of covers I have in mind to do at some point as well. It fits in nicely with some new songs I am writing so there is potential for it to be a part of a bigger release.
