Interview: Dead Hazards Set to Release New Album Saline om April 20, 2025

What inspired the theme or concept behind this album?

It's not really a concept album and the songs differ a lot in their themes, but a large part of it is sort of about isolation.

Were there any particular events or emotions that shaped the songwriting?

Not necessarily a specific event, but it I had to name a feeling that often appears I'd probably say disillusionment.

Were there any challenges you faced during the recording process?

Saline came together in increments over the course of the past year. We had to record a lot of it separately, and each instrument took several weeks. Just didn't have the resources to make things efficient enough. Mixing was not quick or easy either as it took a lot of the summer of '24, but we did make it through thanks to our engineer João Janz.

Which track was the most fun to create, and why?

“Tourist Trap”, definitely. Lots of transitions and instrument changes in there, different rhythms, that kind of stuff. We mixed up these old-timey blues/jazz passages to make like a periodically changing salad.

Did you experiment with any new techniques, instruments, or styles on this record?

The album is led by low guitars all throughout, but we did end up using more unusual instruments and styles in some bits. In places you can hear electric violin, Zippo percussion, nature ambience, frequencies from image-to-audio (artwork) conversion, and similar homemade sounds.

How do you feel this album represents your evolution as a band?

Starting out, we seldom published and experimented instead, attempting to merge more unusual heavy genres that aren't necessarily metal. The few tracks that we first 'released' were primarily on SoundCloud, and they're like from different worlds. Saline is more cohesive all throughout but does have some of the things we had learned experimenting.

What do you hope your fans take away from this album?

Well from a bird's eye view the album is sort of a downer. So, I hope people can catch the weirder things in it, those we had the most fun recording. Hopefully it doesn't sound all death and despair.

Have fans influenced the direction of your music or this album in any way?

You have to have fans for that!

What can fans expect from your upcoming tour or album release events?

It'll only be a digital release, at least for now. Still a few things to finalize, hopefully our own website will be up around the time of the release, and also nicely-organized liner notes.

Do you have any music videos planned for the album? What can you share about them?

Videos aren't really a priority, but we'll see if we can make something interesting going forward. I'm a fan of music videos where plots of classic movies are used or parodied.

If you could describe this album in three words, what would they be?

Too much fuzz.

Is there a specific moment during the album’s creation that you’ll always remember?

I (vocalist) laughed like a maniac at my first scratch vocal of the second chorus of Endless Delay, for quite a while, by myself in the booth. Wanted to do something different there and what it ended up being is, I call it 'cough singing'. After all the fun that vocal actually started sounding heavy to me and the band, so I rerecorded and we used it. Causes lung pain though and I'm still not entirely certain that it sounds good.

Do you have a tour booked or is one being booked to promote the album?

We're not doing live shows right now.
