Interview with Adam of AstroGun. They are releasing a new single called "Star Radio" on April 1st.
What inspired the creation of this single?
The single is part of the band's new album Castles For The Muse which was released March 1, 2025. It was not created with intention of it being a single. Moreover, after the LP was made, the band decided that Star Radio came out as one of the best songs and hence it was chosen to be the first single. I Believe In Her and Sorrow Song will also be released as singles later this year.
What story or message does the song convey?
Guitarist Robby Thunders came up with the title for the song and vocalist Adam Anthony wrote the lyrics around it. It's about the longing for inspiration, something which may have come easily in the past but is increasingly difficult to find in the current, isolating world.
Can you tell us about the creative process?
Robby Thunders usually comes up with the basic song idea and structure for the band and this one was no different. He recorded the demo for Star Radio using Garage Band with lead and rhythm guitar tracks and a dummy drum track to share with the rest of the group. The other instrumental arrangements are worked out collectively in a music studio. Adam Anthony wrote the lyrics on his own time.
How does this song differ from your previous releases?
The song is very post-punk influenced, which is typical for the band. Liquid Love, from the previous album is similar to this, for example. But just in comparison with Liquid Love, the vocals take a more delicate and nuanced approach.
What challenges did you face while writing or recording?
Finding the balance between nailing the fine details and overthinking it. Getting the little touches right in the song (a vocal line, an extra guitar part on the bridge, etc.) can be important in elevating it to the next level, but spending too time on it can detrimental, and have the opposite effect. Hard to know when to call a song "done".
Have you performed it live yet, and what was the audience’s reaction?
Yes, we perform this song during most of our shows currently. It seems to be a crowd favorite.
Is this single part of a larger project, like an album or EP?
Yes, as mentioned before, the album is Castles For The Muse.
